The train service in Kenya was since independence under the operation of the Kenya Railways Corporation. The tracks used are mostly the same build during the pre-colonial era.
A poor safety record, management problems, delays and service interruptions resulted in a cancellation of passenger services. Currently only the Nairobi – Mombasa service is in operation. Only cargo trains operate other routes.
The Nairobi – Mombasa service leaves either City at 7am four days a week, you can check and confirm schedules while in town.
This train ride passes through amazing scenery and you may be able to catch a glimpse of a variety of wildlife while passing through the Athi plains, in the Tsavo.
Corporation is currently undergoing privatization in an attempt to improve its services. South African consortium recently won a bid to operate the Kenyan rail service for the next 25 years with promises of revamping rail services in the country.
