Nairobi, Kenya’s Capital City was fondly referred to as “the City in the Sun” during the 1980s and 90s is one of the largest cities in Africa and a regional commerce hub. It is also home to the United Nations Environmental Program located in Gigiri; west of the city centre.
The City is home to a population of over 2 million residents and its population is steadily on the rise with the influx of refugees from neighboring Somalia and Sudan. People from the rural areas also migrate to Nairobi in search of employment opportunities.
At present, the City is battling a high crime rate which includes; violent robbery, car jacking and mugging. While here you will notice armed police presence within the City centre.
Bag snatching is common and tourists are targeted, you should therefore not unnecessarily carry valuables while in the city.
Most tourists do not spend a long time in the city. It is more of a place to “refuel” and make your holiday plans.
Despite this Nairobi is a vibrant city, home to a number of nightclubs, pubs, shopping malls, restaurants and casinos.
Places to visit include; the National Museum and the Nairobi National Park in Langata.
The city is also home to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, which caters for most international flights to and from Kenya.
