Mombasa is the second largest city in Kenya after Nairobi, and is the Provincial Headquarters of the Coast Province. The City is home to the Moi International Airport which caters for most domestic and international flights to and from the coast.
It is also the location of the main oil refinery which supplies petroleum products to landlocked East African Countries including; Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Port of Mombasa is also the busiest in Eastern Africa.
Mombasa has a long and interesting history, a town that can trace its origins to before the 16th century. The town developed because of its location along the busy Indian Ocean trade route which attracted visitors from Arabia, India and Europe.
Mombasa was the scene of years of fighting between the Omani Arabs and the Portuguese for the control of this important spot along the trade route.
The town’s cultural history is present in some of its architecture, the Mombasa old town and its diverse ethnic composition which includes the Swahili people, Arabs and Hindu.
Like other parts of the Kenyan coast, Mombasa experiences generally hot and humid weather patterns.
The City experiences a relatively low crime rate when compared to Nairobi. Despite this you should take normal precautionary measures while in the town to avoid being mugged or conned.
