Kenyan Weather

Kenya is a diverse country in terms of its geographical composition, from the coastal lowlands, the central and western highlands in the rift valley regions, to the desert areas to the north and north east of the country.

This makes weather patterns somewhat unpredictable despite the country’s fairly small size. The weather at the Kenyan coast is mainly influenced by the Monsoon winds blowing from the Indian Ocean, while the rainfall patterns in the western parts of the country are mainly influenced by Lake Victoria.

Temperatures also vary greatly across the country; the central parts of the country around the Mount Kenya region are colder than other areas while the coast is more humid and experiences higher temperatures. The east and north east parts of the country are hot and dry receiving very little rainfall.

The dry seasons are the best times for wildlife viewing with animal populations concentrated along rivers, streams and around waterholes.

A number of the Country’s parks do not have all weather roads and travel during the long rains is hampered by muddy and sometimes impassable roads.

The peak tourism season is between December and January which is normally a warm and dry period attracting large numbers of visitors to the coast.
