While in the major cities; Nairobi and Mombasa in particular, you will marvel at the sight of the flamboyant Matatus, with their artistic paintwork, sound systems; some even contain video entertainment for commuters.

Fares are normally standard and vary depending on the time of the day. During peak hours, you can expect to pay more. When business is slow, you may be able to bargain and travel at a lower fare than suggested by the tout.

Matatus can also be used for long distance travel and prior booking may be necessary for with some Matatu companies. There are also 8-seater Peugeots that ply some routes. These are usually faster, more comfortable and will charge a higher fee.

Bus transport in Kenya consists of a number of bus companies. The major ones are; Tawfiq, Kenya Bus, Malindi Bus and Akamba. These ply a number of routes between the country’s towns. Prior booking may be necessary. The Kenya Bus service also operates a City service within Nairobi.
